Methadone Treatment

The Mission of CATAR Ltd is to provide quality outpatient treatment services for qualified persons who are addicted to opiates and related chemicals. The Primary purpose of CATAR Ltd is to assist clients in attaining the highest level of functioning in physical, emotional, vocational and social structures.

We provide medical methadone maintenance and detoxification services.  We also provide individual and group counseling as well as self help groups for our patients, including aftercare services.

Methadone is a safe and rigorously well-tested medication that is safe and efficacious for the treatment of narcotic withdrawal and dependence. In concept, it is similar to diabetic patients receiving insulin treatment to restore normalcy for a deficiency of pancreatic hormones. For over 30 years this synthetic narcotic has been rigorously tested and used to treat opioid addiction. Opiates release an excess of dopamine and diminish the production of endorphins in the body.  This causes users to need an opiate continuously to occupy the opioid receptor in the brain. Methadone occupies this receptor and is the stabilizing factor that permits addicts on methadone to change their behavior and to discontinue opiate use.

Taken orally once a day, methadone suppresses withdrawal between 24 and 48 hours. It is, however, only effective in cases of addiction to opioid drugs, and it is not an effective treatment for other drugs of abuse. Methadone reduces the cravings and blocks the high, but it does not provide the euphoric rush. Consequently, patients do not experience the extreme highs and lows that result from opiate abuse. Ultimately, the patient remains physically dependent, but is freed from the uncontrolled, compulsive, and disruptive behavior seen in addicts.

Methadone treatment provides addicts with medically prescribed methadone to relieve withdrawal symptoms, reduces the opiate craving, and brings about a biochemical balance in the body. Under a physician's supervision, methadone does not impair cognitive functions, and has no adverse effects on mental capability, intelligence, or employability. It is not sedating or intoxicating, nor does it interfere with ordinary activities such as driving a car or operating machinery. Patients are able to feel pain and experience emotional reactions. Most importantly, methadone relieves the craving associated with opiate addiction.

The Essence of Drug Addiction

Addiction loggerhead writes "From "The Brain:Understanding Neurobiology" Teachers Guide

(NAPS)–The word "addiction" calls up many different images and strong emotions. But what are we reacting to? Too often we focus on the wrong aspects of addiction, so our efforts to deal with this difficult issue can be badly misguided.

Day one in the program: I learned that 12-step programs were filled with jovial brain damaged people who actually appeared to be happy to go to those stupid meetings.

Seven days: The best diet in the world was to take step one. One hundred pounds was lifted from my shoulders after admitting I was powerless over alcohol and other drugs. The meetings didn’t seem so stupid after all.

NIDA InfoFacts: Hospital Visits
Posted by only1russ on Saturday, August 18 @ 11:19:16 CDT (165 reads)
Addiction loggerhead writes "The latest data on drug abuse-related hospital emergency department (ED) visits are findings from the Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN), based on data for the second half of 2003. DAWN is a public health surveillance system that monitors drug-related ED visits for selected metropolitan areas and provides estimates for the Nation. It is a product of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. For the reporting period, 260 out of 518 sampled hospitals submitted usable data to DAWN. On average, each DAWN member hospital submitted 260 DAWN cases, or about 43 per month.

The findings below are summarized as a courtesy by NIDA, for those interested in drug-related hospital emergency data. For more detailed findings, please visit DAWNInfo.samhsa.gov.

Professional Perspectives on Addiction Medicine
Posted by only1russ on Wednesday, August 01 @ 10:32:37 CDT (329 reads)
Addiction catar-ava writes "
It's not difficult to obtain a variety of opinions about methadone, and chances are that should you do so, many of them would be quite negative and unfounded. This would be true if you were to ask people who have had no experience with this substance either directly or indirectly. Chances are, the person asked would not know anyone receiving methadone treatment, nor even know about someone receiving this treatment.

The Ghost Haunting Methadone
Posted by michael on Tuesday, July 31 @ 08:21:06 CDT (407 reads)
Addiction
The stigma associated with drug addiction and in some cases addiction treatment programs is a most powerful and pervasive negative force in American society. Stigmatization, according to Joseph's findings has been a major factor in preventing more extensive treatment of the estimated 750,000 opiate addicts in the U.S.

GENETIC VARIATIONS
Posted by only1russ on Friday, July 27 @ 17:43:40 CDT (222 reads)
Addiction catar-ava writes "
How genetic variation makes people more susceptible to alcohol and narcotic drug addiction.

Scientists have learned how a genetic variation long suspected in making some people susceptible to alcoholism and narcotic drug addiction actually does so.

In laboratory studies, this variation greatly reduced the amount of protein that the DNA in a cell produced.
