Methadone Treatment
The Mission of CATAR Ltd is to provide quality outpatient treatment services for qualified persons who are addicted to opiates and related chemicals. The Primary purpose of CATAR Ltd is to assist clients in attaining the highest level of functioning in physical, emotional, vocational and social structures.
We provide medical methadone maintenance and detoxification services. We also provide individual and group counseling as well as self help groups for our patients, including aftercare services.
Methadone is a safe and rigorously well-tested medication that is safe and efficacious for the treatment of narcotic withdrawal and dependence. In concept, it is similar to diabetic patients receiving insulin treatment to restore normalcy for a deficiency of pancreatic hormones. For over 30 years this synthetic narcotic has been rigorously tested and used to treat opioid addiction. Opiates release an excess of dopamine and diminish the production of endorphins in the body. This causes users to need an opiate continuously to occupy the opioid receptor in the brain. Methadone occupies this receptor and is the stabilizing factor that permits addicts on methadone to change their behavior and to discontinue opiate use.
Taken orally once a day, methadone suppresses withdrawal between 24 and 48 hours. It is, however, only effective in cases of addiction to opioid drugs, and it is not an effective treatment for other drugs of abuse. Methadone reduces the cravings and blocks the high, but it does not provide the euphoric rush. Consequently, patients do not experience the extreme highs and lows that result from opiate abuse. Ultimately, the patient remains physically dependent, but is freed from the uncontrolled, compulsive, and disruptive behavior seen in addicts.
Methadone treatment provides addicts with medically prescribed methadone to relieve withdrawal symptoms, reduces the opiate craving, and brings about a biochemical balance in the body. Under a physician's supervision, methadone does not impair cognitive functions, and has no adverse effects on mental capability, intelligence, or employability. It is not sedating or intoxicating, nor does it interfere with ordinary activities such as driving a car or operating machinery. Patients are able to feel pain and experience emotional reactions. Most importantly, methadone relieves the craving associated with opiate addiction. |

loggerhead writes "The latest data on drug abuse-related hospital emergency department (ED) visits are findings from the Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN), based on data for the second half of 2003. DAWN is a public health surveillance system that monitors drug-related ED visits for selected metropolitan areas and provides estimates for the Nation. It is a product of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. For the reporting period, 260 out of 518 sampled hospitals submitted usable data to DAWN. On average, each DAWN member hospital submitted 260 DAWN cases, or about 43 per month.
The findings below are summarized as a courtesy by NIDA, for those interested in drug-related hospital emergency data. For more detailed findings, please visit DAWNInfo.samhsa.gov.
